I will confess to a brief disappointment in this fact I wanted the books depiction of dissociation to be more explicit, I guess but the eventual reveal of Gideon as, more or less, the voice in Harrowharks head ended up having a real power to it. One of the tropes of anime is for two characters who are destined to fall in love to take a bath together and talk about their pasts, often while revealing their deepest and darkest secrets. But Muir uses the claustrophobia and narrowed focus to fine purpose, concentrating the action around a series of increasingly torturous tests (which serve both to hook the plot along and give some baseline explanations for the entwined science, religion and necromantic magic on which her universe depends) and the relationships that develop between the limited cast of characters particularly Gideon and Harrow. The collaboration is reflected in Gideon's journey retraining from a soldier's longsword to a duelist's rapier; Harris herself transitioned from fencing to the longsword. So how did you strike the balance between keeping us within Harrows perspective, but then also having Gideon needle at her periodically, so that we sort of get the idea as we read that theres something more going on there? But its clear that Harrow has also chosen this particular strategy because she is unwilling to acknowledge or accept Gideons death, because her grief at that idea is so overwhelming. Something went wrong. Thats what these books are about. Or at least thats what they are about for me! So I wanted to ask about what your goal and thought process was when creating such a tone for the story.. The Eighth House attempts to bring her to justice for the murder of her cavalier, but they are killed when Colum the Eighth is possessed by an angry ghost, who in turn kills his necromancer. Theres a passage in Harrow that I have read to many friends who have experience with dissociation or other forms of trauma, and it hits all of us the same way which is to say it leaves us reeling. So I hope that every girl who got told off for being angry, and who, like me, in their secret heart of hearts, just kind of pretends that she has a huge broadsword or ax and hits people, its for them. And in her head, shes just like, God, I hate you so much. Its with that kind of energy that Gideon is able to slip beneath. WebGideon the Ninth is queer. You're pretty much all-powerful. In this amazing novella, Molly is a young girl whose blood brings about murder. (John is exactly who I would be if, after a nuclear disaster that it is heavily implied I caused, I ended up becoming an immortal necromantic god, in that I too would spend a lot of time making pop culture references to properties no one else knows because they all came out 10,000 years before.) But at the end of the day, what I will say in terms of Gideon and Harrow is that it is meant to be homoerotic. But the thing is, the AUs she keeps creating arent designed to overwrite the knowledge of a death. Have hated each other for all of their lives. These stories never go any other way. Im not one of these authors whos like, I just let the characters take me to where they want to go. They go where I damn well put them! Despite their clashing personalities and mutual hatred of each other, Gideon is Harrow's only real choice of cavalier, primarily due to an atmospheric contamination incident around the time of their births that killed the rest of the Ninth House's children. It doesnt have anything in it of the mythology, which I hope is baroque, which comes later. And heres another thing I noticed: I think Muir got much more confident as a writer between book one and book two. Gideon the Ninth ends with Gideons death, just as she and Harrow have finally found an equal footing and seem poised to turn a corner in their relationship. But I also have a hard time imagining that if I were talking about a scene between a male and female character where theyre standing in a pool and exchanging their darkest secrets, and then holding each other in their arms and saying, one flesh one end, and I said, This is a love scene, that people would be like, But have you considered that maybe theyre long-lost siblings? So Im wondering if youve experienced any of the same hesitancy to read that relationship as romantic in the reception to the book, and whether it surprised you. Harrow was never going to be the type of character who was an intuitive magician, I think what classic D&D calls the difference between a wizard and sorcerer. Each week, we explore unique solutions to some of the world's biggest problems. Oddly enough, for as little as I understood anything going on in the mythos of Harrow which essentially tries to reimagine every heavy metal album cover as a redesign of a Lisa Frank original (Im going to find the right comparison point sooner or later) the world-building felt majestic to me. So in order to further their own ambitions, they have to learn to draw out their deeply buried appreciation for each other. WebEven if you don't see there as being romantic tension between Gideon and Harrow, Gideon at least is pretty clearly portrayed as a lesbian - aside from her taste in porn and The Houses in turn are ruled by the Emperor, an impossibly powerful, immortal necromancer whom they have worshipped as a god for the past ten thousand years. WebGideon has been abused and degraded by everyone in the Ninth house while simultaneously being told that she must be absolutely loyal to the house that despises But now they have to depend on each other to survive because, of course, the minute everyone arrives at Caanan House (the creepy mansion), all communications are blacked out, all the fancy space shuttles they came in are pushed into the sea, and they are told there's a very good chance that all of them are going to die, because there's something horrible hidden inside Caanan House. Gideons parentage is about to be revealed in a big way. How the Great Recession paved the way for influencers to inherit the earth, The surprising lesson from a century of Oscar scandals. It is honestly one of the best books I have ever read about dissociation.
